Hear Drs. Demetre Daskalakis, Pragna Patel, and Evelyn Twentyman from the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as they discuss vaccinations, treatment, and other tools that can keep everyone safer this respiratory illness season.

Learning Objectives:

Gerontological Society of America

James C. Appleby, BSPharm, MPH, ScD (Hon), is the Chief Executive Officer of The Gerontological Society of America (GSA), the nation's largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to research, education, and practice in the field of aging. The Society works to advance innovation in aging and disseminate information among scientists, clinicians, policy makers, and the public. He is leading the Society’s current initiative to “reframe aging” in America by fostering accurate narratives of aging to replace the outdated “conventional wisdom” that dominates public understanding. The 5,500-member Society is advancing major initiatives related to improving adult immunization rates, earlier detection of cognitive impairment, improving oral health, and demonstrating the impact of the longevity economy. Appleby is also currently serving a four-year term on the National Advisory Council on Aging after being appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, and he additionally serves on the National Alliance for Caregiving Board of Directors. Prior to joining GSA, he had a 17-year career with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) where he served in a variety of roles before being appointed Chief Operating Officer. Before joining APhA, he was on faculty at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (PCPS). Appleby holds a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from PCPS and a master of Public Health degree from Temple University. He has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

Demetre C. Daskalakis, MD, MPH

Director, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

As Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), Dr. Daskalakis leads CDC’s efforts to detect, prevent, and respond to vaccine-preventable and respiratory infectious disease threats. He oversees and coordinates activities across the Center to effectively balance public health efforts in both domestic and global arenas, and to accommodate the specific needs of a variety of populations at risk for vaccine preventable diseases across the lifespan. Dr. Daskalakis also plays a key role in CDC emergency responses to respiratory and vaccine-preventable diseases such as seasonal respiratory viruses (COVID-19, influenza, and RSV), measles, and avian influenza.

Pragna Patel, MD, MPH

Chief Medical Officer, Coronaviruses and Other Respiratory Viruses Division, National Center for Immunizations and Respiratory Diseases

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

As the Chief Medical Officer of CDC's Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division (CORVD), Dr. Patel serves as a clinical expert in COVID-19, including long COVID, and other respiratory viruses with a focus on immunocompromised persons. She assumed this role after serving on the CDC COVID-19 Response in numerous leadership roles leading clinical activities and guidance. During her CDC career, she has worked extensively on program implementation and research related to the treatment and prevention of COVID-19, HIV, non-communicable diseases, and other respiratory illnesses. Dr. Patel also plays a key role in CDC emergency responses for seasonal respiratory viruses (SARS CoV-2, influenza, and RSV), avian influenza, and other pathogens such as Ebola.

Evelyn Twentyman, MD, MPH

Senior Advisor for Vaccine Strategy, Immunization Services Division, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

As Senior Advisor for Vaccine Strategy for CDC’s Immunization Services Division (ISD), Dr. Twentyman coordinates multiple efforts across CDC to expand equitable access to vaccines and to equitably reduce the burden of vaccine-preventable disease nationwide. As a part of these efforts, Dr. Twentyman currently leads CDC’s Bridge Access Program for COVID-19 Vaccines, which provides no cost COVID-19 vaccination to adults in the United States without health insurance and to those whose insurance does not cover COVID-19 vaccination. Dr. Twentyman has served in numerous leadership roles previously, including as Chief Medical Officer of CDC’s COVID-19 Response Vaccine Task Force, and as CDC lead of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice’s Working Group on COVID-19 Vaccines.
