Innovation in Aging is hosting this webinar to share a collection of recent findings on aging from sub-Saharan Africa. Special issue editors Dr. Jennifer Tehan Stanley and Dr. JohnBosco Chika Chukwuorji will introduce themes that emerged in the recent special issue on this topic, and each of the featured speakers. Participants will learn about the unique opportunities and challenges of aging in this region.
Johnbosco Chika Chukwuorji, PhD (Moderator)

JohnBosco Chika Chukwuorji, PhD, is currently a postdoctoral research associate at Michigan State University; and was a visiting Fulbright scholar at Cleveland State University. He also holds a senior lecturer position in psychology and a senior research fellow at the IVAN Research Institute in Nigerian. He was a Developing Country Fellow (2022) of the International Society for the Study of Behavioural Development (ISSBD). In addition to being guest editor of a special issue on Aging in sub-Saharan Africa for Innovation in Aging and Editor of the Nigerian Journal of Psychological Research, he holds editorial positions in several journals. Recently, he led an invited review paper for the Journals of Gerontology: Series B, which identified key themes of current geropsychology research and practice in Africa. He has authored (or co-authored) over 100 ressearch publications focusing on how individual-level and social-level processes and pathways influence mental well-being across the life course.

Dr. Jenny Tehan Stanley is a Professor of Psychology at The University of Akron in Ohio. Dr. Stanley studies social cognition and aging.
Haeyoon Chang, PhD, MPH
Recent Doctoral Graduate

Ms. Chang is a recent doctoral graduate from the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and a Rackham Merit Fellow. Her dissertation explored the pathways through which the South African Older Person's Grant influences various activities, examining how these pathways interact with social determinants of health to produce both positive and negative health outcomes among older adults in rural South Africa. She earned her MPH in Chronic Disease Epidemiology from the Yale School of Public Health, where she investigated public health challenges in hypertension and diabetes in Uganda, providing evidence-based recommendations for interventions. Additionally, she managed NIH-funded projects at Partnerships for Native Health in Seattle, focusing on cognitive health and stroke among American Indian older adults. From 2013 to 2015, she served in the Peace Corps in Tonga, developing culturally tailored nutrition education materials to address obesity while considering broader social and environmental factors.
Samuel M. Mwangi, PhD

Dr. Samuel M. Mwangi teaches in the Department of Sociology, Gender and Development Studies at Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya. He has a Bachelor of Education from Kenyatta University, a Master of Arts degree in Gerontology from Wichita State University, Kansas, and a PhD in Social Gerontology from Miami University of Ohio. He has published work on retirement/income security, palliative care, gerontology education, intergenerational relations, and social support systems for rural elders. His articles have appeared in: Gerontology & Geriatrics Education, International Journal of Research and Education, PLOS ONE Medicine, Innovation in Aging, Frontiers in Aging, Geriatric Care, Innovation on Aging, and IOSR Journal of Humanities and Social Science. He has consulted for the Retirement Benefits Authority of Kenya on pension coverage. His other research interests are social protection for older adults and elder abuse. He is a founding member of the Kenya Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (KAGG), and Africa Research on Ageing Network (AFRAN).
Babatola Dominic Olawa, PhD

Dr. Babatola Dominic Olawa holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Ekiti State University, Nigeria. His research focus includes biopsychosocial factors influencing emotional well-being in young adulthood and old age, the mental health of vulnerable populations, including prison inmates, internally displaced persons and security personnel on war fronts, and cross-cultural factors in subjective well-being among older adults. Dr. Olawa was a senior lecturer in the Department of Psychology at Federal University Oye-Ekiti. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Lifestyle Diseases Research Entity, North-West University, Mafikeng, South Africa, from 2019 to 2022. He is an alumnus/fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and conducted research at the Institute For Gerontology, University of Vechta, Germany. He currently collaborates with researchers at the North-West University, Mafikeng, South Africa. Dr. Olawa has published articles in reputable journals.
