We are pleased to present a webinar featuring research from the newly published special issue of the Psychological Sciences section of The Journals of Gerontology, Series B titled “Decision Neuroscience and Aging.” The Scientific Research Network on Decision Neuroscience and Aging (SRNDNA), a National Institute on Aging-sponsored network, spearheaded this special issue and has supported interdisciplinary decision neuroscience research across adulthood since 2010. 

The webinar will feature brief presentations of articles published in the issue, including work on: cognitive and affective mechanisms of decision making in older adulthood; neural correlates of age-related changes in decision making; and real-world applications of insights from the lab.

Two guest editors of the special issue, Dr. Karolina Lempert and Dr. Debbie Yee, will moderate and introduce the webinar, along with SRNDNA co-director Dr. Kendra Seaman. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with the authors during a Q&A session.

Karolina Lempert, PhD

Karolina Lempert is an assistant professor at the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology at Adelphi University. She received her B.A. in Neurobiology from Harvard University, and her Ph.D. in Psychology from New York University. Her postdoctoral training was at the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Psychology and Penn Memory Center. Dr. Lempert studies the neural mechanisms underlying value-based decision making, using behavioral experiments, pupillometry, and MRI. Recently, her work has focused on the relationship between episodic memory and choice, and on how changes in episodic memory with aging might lead to changes in decision making. Dr. Lempert's research has been funded by the National Institute on Aging, the National Science Foundation, and the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation.

Dr. Debbie Yee is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Computational Affective Motivational Psychiatry (CAMP) Lab at the University of Iowa. She received her B.S. in Brain and Cognitive Sciences from MIT and her Ph.D. in Psychological and Brain Sciences from Washington University in St. Louis, followed by postdoctoral training at Brown University. Her research investigates the mechanisms of motivation, affect, and decision-making, with a focus on translating neurocomputational frameworks to understand the neural and computational basis of mental health.

Colleen Frank, PhD, is a postdoctoral research associate at Washington University in St Louis. She completed her PhD in Psychology [Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience] at the University of Michigan. She then worked as a postdoctoral scholar at UT Dallas’ Center for Vital Longevity before joining the Knight Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. Her research examines the cognitive and affective mechanisms underlying how people make important financial, health, and social decisions across adulthood.

York University

Patrick is a 2nd year PhD student in Clinical Neuropsychology at York University, whose research investigates cognitive aging and decision-making through the lens of the exploration-exploitation trade-off. He conducts his research jointly through the Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuro-Intervention Lab at York University, under the supervision of Dr. Gary Turner, and the Laboratory of Brain and Cognition at the Montreal Neurological Institute, under the supervision of Dr. R. Nathan Spreng. Patrick was recently awarded York University's MA Thesis Prize in recognition of his research on the relationship between brain microstructure and decision-making bias in older adults. His clinical and research interests extend to the broader study of aging and age-related neurodegenerative disease, with a particular focus on how cognitive and neural changes across the lifespan inform diagnosis and intervention.

Dr. Kendra L. Seaman is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of the Aging Well Lab at the University of Texas at Dallas, where she studies how learning, motivation, and decision-making change across adulthood using behavioral, computational, and neuroimaging methods. She earned her PhD and MA in Psychology from the Catholic University of America and her B.A. degrees in Biology and Psychology from the University of Kansas, followed by postdoctoral training at Yale and Duke in the Motivated Cognition and Aging Brain Lab. Since joining UT Dallas in 2019, she has advanced research on how adults weigh social, emotional, and reward-based information in decision-making. She is also a Fellow, Eugene McDermott Distinguished Professor and serves as a co-director of the Scientific Research Network on Decision Neuroscience and Aging.

Shensheng Wang, PhD, is a postdoctoral fellow in the School of Psychology at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His research broadly integrates cognitive, computational, and developmental psychology to investigate decision making across the adult lifespan. Grounded in a formal computational theory-testing framework, his research examines how cognitive mechanics and individual differences drive trust-related decisions and vulnerability in aging populations.
